On Friday, December 21st, 2012, the statute of” Stewardship, Italian Association for Ethical Management of Resources” was signed in Rome. To give the glad tidings were the founding members: Annalisa Casino, Francesco Consoli, Gianni Palumbo, Valter Carasso and Myriam Ines Giangiacomo. The Association aims to promote stewardship as a model for ethical management of resources through meetings, seminars, training and consulting. Stewardship is also a network of associations, institutions, organizations, companies and professionals who apply and / or consider the stewardship a key strategy for managing ethical and responsible use of resources.

The Idea of ​​an association that deals with the issues related to stewardship derived from the desire to share and promote the culture of the concept of stewardship, almost unknown to most people in Italy except to insiders. Although an adequate verbalization in the Italian language hasn’t been achieved (the word “Stewardship” in fact, cannot be exactly translated in Italian as a single term; “stewardship”  is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning born with a narrow and semantically adjustment over time the meaning of which is “management / administration responsible of other’s resources) the concept of stewardship turns out to be a common need and compelling. The Association, therefore, stems from the desire to respond to a need common to world production and organization” a renewed and current need for the producers and businesses to pay particular attention to the management of natural resources of the planet and the human resources represented by workers and consumers. – The sociologist Irene Pellegrini explains – This requirement is primarily a demand of the global market and as such can hardly be evaded by the productive world, since it is already a few decades old (Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the UN Conference on Environment and Development) an institutional, macroeconomic attention, about the need to ensure a sustainable growth and economic development of the planet, because even at the micro level and the individual has changed the awareness and management of their ability to choose consumption. The concept of stewardship, therefore, innovates the concept of ethical management of both natural resources but also in social and organizational contexts characterized not only by a plurality and heterogeneity of stakeholders,  individuals, organizations, businesses, who contribute with their own resources and which is answered on its action and of its decisions, but also the need to take account of stakeholders that do not have a representation (the ecosystem, forests, animals, future generations, land, public health, etc.). . The stewardship today is no longer just an ethical principle, but a set of practices, procedures, standards and norms, which, in a systematic way, aim at providing guidance (and constrain) so responsible decisions and behavior of organizations and individuals , administrative processes and decision-making and production processes, logistics and supplies, to eventual disposal. You could say that stewardship is a way to address the problem of ethics to deal with the problems posed by complexity in a systemic way.
